CVE-2024-38812 is a critical heap-based buffer overflow in VMware vCenter Server’s implementation of the DCE/RPC protocol. The flaw can be triggered by sending a specially crafted network packet to a vulnerable vCenter Server instance, causing memory corruption in DCERPC handling that may lead to remote code execution. The issue affects VMware vCenter Server 7.0 and 8.0 and, by inclusion of vCenter, also impacts VMware Cloud Foundation deployments using affected versions. The vulnerability was initially patched in September 2024, but the original fix was later determined to be incomplete, and Broadcom issued additional patches in October 2024. Broadcom subsequently confirmed that exploitation had occurred in the wild.
