CVE-2024-40956 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel DMAEngine Intel Data Streaming Accelerator (idxd) driver’s irq_process_work_list processing path. The path iterates a work list while completing descriptors. Descriptor completion can free a descriptor, and concurrent reuse of that descriptor by another thread can invalidate the list iterator when the entry has not first been safely removed. The fix uses safe list iteration so entries may be deleted during traversal without dereferencing a freed or repurposed descriptor.
