CVE-2024-40959 is a NULL-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel's IPv6 XFRM implementation. The xfrm6_get_saddr() function does not safely handle a NULL return from ip6_dst_idev() during source-address selection. Dereferencing the missing IPv6 device information can cause a kernel fault. A reported failure occurred during IPv6 XFRM route resolution invoked by WireGuard handshake transmission. The fix checks the return value of ip6_dst_idev() and handles the NULL case.

A NULL-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel's IPv6 XFRM implementation occurs when xfrm6_get_saddr() fails to handle a NULL return from ip6_dst_idev(). It can cause a kernel fault and loss of availability. The advisory assigns a CVSS v3 base score of 5.5, with local access and low privileges required. Affected Google Container-Optimized OS kernel packages should be updated to version 18555.0.0 or later.
