CVE-2024-41055 is a race-condition flaw in the Linux kernel memory-management sparse-memory code. In pfn_section_valid(), a concurrent section_deactivate() operation can clear memory_section->usage after it is read. A prior change added READ_ONCE() for this access, but did not validate the returned pointer before dereferencing it. Consequently, pfn_section_valid() can dereference a NULL usage pointer. The upstream correction validates the pointer before use.
