CVE-2024-41066 is a memory-leak vulnerability in the Linux kernel IBM Virtual NIC (ibmvnic) driver's transmit-path bookkeeping. The driver validated that a transmit-buffer index obtained from its free-map structure was in range, but did not verify that the corresponding transmit-buffer socket-buffer pointer was NULL before assigning a new socket buffer. If the free-map and transmit-buffer structures became unsynchronized, assignment could overwrite a live socket-buffer reference and leak the previously referenced buffer. The upstream correction verifies that the destination pointer is NULL; on detecting an unexpected existing pointer, it emits a warning and frees the stale socket buffer before proceeding.
