CVE-2024-41996 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in implementations of finite-field Diffie-Hellman key agreement that validate the order of a peer public key when using an approved safe prime. In the affected scenario, a remote client can supply Diffie-Hellman parameters and public-key material that cause the server to perform unnecessarily expensive server-side DHE modular-exponentiation work during key exchange processing. The flaw is not described as a cryptographic break of Diffie-Hellman itself; rather, it is an algorithmic resource-consumption issue in how public-key order validation is handled. Because the attacker can trigger high-cost computations with comparatively low effort, the protocol exchange can be abused to create asymmetric resource consumption on the server.
