CVE-2024-43491 is a critical Windows Update / Servicing Stack vulnerability affecting Windows 10 version 1507, specifically supported Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2015 LTSB systems. Microsoft states that a servicing stack defect introduced through updates released from March 12, 2024 through August 2024 could silently roll back previously applied security fixes for certain Optional Components to their RTM state. As a result, vulnerabilities that had already been mitigated in those optional components could become reachable again. Reported affected optional components include Internet Explorer 11, IIS/WWW Services, SMB 1.0/CIFS, MSMQ, Windows Media Player, AD LDS tools, and .NET Framework 4.6/ASP.NET 4.6-related components. Microsoft and multiple cited sources characterize the issue as a pre-authentication remote code execution condition because the rollback can re-expose previously patched RCE flaws in those components. Microsoft also stated that no exploitation of CVE-2024-43491 itself had been detected; rather, the risk derives from the servicing stack regression reintroducing exploitable states in optional components.
