CVE-2024-43889 is a divide-by-zero vulnerability in the Linux kernel padata multithreading implementation. When a padata_mt_job structure supplies a min_chunk value of zero, padata_do_multithreaded() can initialize chunk_size to zero. Subsequent execution of padata_mt_helper() with ps->chunk_size equal to zero can trigger a divide-by-zero kernel panic. A difficult-to-reproduce failure was observed during system boot. The fix ensures chunk_size is at least one regardless of input parameters.

A Linux kernel padata flaw can cause a divide-by-zero panic when padata_mt_helper() receives a zero chunk size, impacting availability. The content describes a difficult-to-reproduce boot-time crash and assigns a CVSS v3 base score of 5.5, with local access and low privileges required. The fix ensures chunk_size is at least 1.
A Linux kernel denial-of-service vulnerability in the padata multithreading helper. A local authenticated user/process able to invoke the affected path with a zero min_chunk value can cause a divide-by-zero kernel panic, impacting availability.
