CVE-2024-45306 is a heap-based buffer overflow in Vim. According to the provided description, patch v9.1.0038 optimized cursor position calculation and removed a loop that previously ensured the cursor position always remained within the bounds of a line. As a result, Vim could retain an invalid cursor position that points past the end of a line. When Vim later accesses the line pointer using that out-of-bounds cursor position, a heap-buffer-overflow can occur. The exact sequence of inputs or file contents required to place the cursor into this invalid state was not yet fully understood at the time of disclosure, and no reproducer test case was included for the fix. The issue was addressed in Vim v9.1.0707.
