CVE-2024-46679 is a race condition in the Linux kernel ethtool link-settings retrieval path. A sysfs read can execute concurrently with reset or removal of a network device. Callers of __ethtool_get_link_ksettings() did not consistently verify that the netdevice retained the device-present state before driver link-setting callbacks accessed device state. This can invoke driver code, including the qede link-settings path, after the device is no longer present and trigger a kernel fault or panic. The fix centralizes device-presence validation in ethtool's link-settings path, protecting all callers.
