CVE-2024-49019 is an elevation of privilege vulnerability in Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS). The flaw affects unpatched certificate authority environments where built-in default version 1 certificate templates can be abused to obtain certificates with unintended authentication capabilities. Reported exploitation involves using version 1 templates that allow the subject name to be supplied in the certificate signing request and that grant broad enrollment permissions. In that condition, an authenticated attacker can craft certificate requests that inject arbitrary application policies or otherwise cause the issued certificate to contain application policy semantics preferred over the template’s configured Extended Key Usage restrictions. This enables abuse of default templates, including commonly deployed server-oriented templates, to mint certificates usable for privileged authentication. The issue is associated with the AD CS abuse technique ESC15 and is also known as EKUwu. In exposed enterprise Active Directory environments, successful exploitation can lead from ordinary authenticated access to impersonation of highly privileged identities, including domain administrators.
