CVE-2024-49040 is a spoofing vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 caused by improper verification of the P2 FROM email header during mail transport. The vulnerable implementation allows certain non-RFC 5322-compliant P2 FROM header formats to pass validation, which can cause mail clients such as Outlook to display a forged sender address as legitimate. The issue affects incoming messages to local recipients and enables an unauthenticated remote attacker to craft email messages in which the displayed sender identity differs from the actual sender context processed by Exchange.
