CVE-2024-5178 is an incomplete input validation vulnerability in the ServiceNow Now Platform SecurelyAccess API affecting Washington DC, Vancouver, and Utah releases. The API's path filtering relied on a blacklist of restricted directory names, while path cleanup removed double-dot sequences before file access. An authenticated administrative user could obfuscate a blacklisted directory name so that validation did not recognize it, but subsequent normalization resolved it to a restricted location, enabling unauthorized reads of sensitive files on the ServiceNow web application server.
