CVE-2024-52965 is a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in Fortinet FortiOS and FortiProxy. The flaw is caused by a missing critical step in authentication in the API login flow that uses both an API key and a PKI user certificate. In affected versions, the products may allow an API user to authenticate successfully even when the presented certificate is invalid. Available reporting indicates the affected logic does not properly enforce certificate validity checks during this authentication path, including acceptance of certificates that may be expired, self-signed, or revoked. This results in improper authentication and unauthorized access to the management API.
