CVE-2024-53197 is an out-of-bounds memory access vulnerability in the Linux kernel ALSA USB-audio subsystem affecting handling for Extigy and Mbox devices. The flaw arises because a malicious or malformed USB device can report a bNumConfigurations value larger than the value initially used by usb_get_configuration when allocating the device configuration array. This mismatch can later cause out-of-bounds accesses when the kernel processes or destroys USB configuration data, including in code paths such as usb_destroy_configuration. The issue has been described as enabling out-of-bounds memory reads and stems from insufficient validation of attacker-controlled USB descriptor data during device enumeration and configuration handling.
