CVE-2024-53961 is a path traversal vulnerability in Adobe ColdFusion that affects ColdFusion 2023 versions earlier than Update 12 and ColdFusion 2021 versions earlier than Update 18. The flaw is caused by improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory, allowing traversal outside the intended directory boundaries. Successful exploitation can enable a remote, unauthenticated attacker to read arbitrary files from the underlying file system of a vulnerable server. The issue is specifically associated with deployments where the ColdFusion administrative interface is exposed to the internet. By accessing files outside the restricted directory set by the application, an attacker may obtain sensitive configuration data and other information useful for follow-on compromise.
