CVE-2025-13499 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the Kafka protocol dissector in Wireshark. It affects Wireshark 4.6.0 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.10. The flaw can be triggered when Wireshark or TShark processes malformed Kafka traffic from a live capture or a crafted packet trace file. Technical analysis tied the crash to Kafka decompression handling in the dissector, where Snappy Xerial framing with a length value of 16 could cause the decompression routine to report success without initializing the decompressed tvbuff pointer. Subsequent code then used the uninitialized buffer, leading to an assertion failure in tvbuff handling and process termination.
