CVE-2025-21042 is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Samsung’s proprietary image-processing library libimagecodec.quram.so, present on Samsung mobile devices prior to SMR Apr-2025 Release 1. The flaw is triggered during parsing of specially crafted TIFF/DNG image content, including malicious Digital Negative (DNG) files. Available reporting attributes the root cause to insufficient bounds checking during image parsing, allowing attacker-controlled data to overwrite adjacent memory and cause memory corruption. Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the image-processing service or application, including com.samsung.ipservice. The vulnerability was exploited in the wild as a zero-day and has been associated with delivery of the LANDFALL Android spyware campaign via malformed DNG images, often reportedly delivered through WhatsApp or other channels that cause automatic image processing.
