CVE-2025-21213 is a Secure Boot security feature bypass in the Windows boot chain, described as a second variant of the Break Out in Hives technique. The issue affects the handling of boot-time trust when older vulnerable Winload versions can be introduced through a downgrade-style attack. In this scenario, an attacker leverages a previously vulnerable boot component to bypass intended Secure Boot protections and regain access to behavior that should no longer be permitted in fully updated systems. The vulnerability is associated with exploitation of the SystemDataDevice element in the boot environment and relies on the ability to boot a vulnerable Winload despite the presence of newer fixes. The result is a bypass of boot integrity assumptions that protect BitLocker-sealed systems during early boot.
