CVE-2025-37778 is a memory-safety flaw in the Linux kernel's ksmbd SMB server implementation, specifically in the Kerberos authentication path. In krb_authenticate, sess->user is freed but the pointer is not cleared to NULL. The code then calls ksmbd_krb5_authenticate to reinitialize sess->user, but that function can return without restoring the pointer. In that failure path, smb2_sess_setup later dereferences sess->user, resulting in access to freed memory. The issue is therefore a dangling-pointer/use-after-free condition in ksmbd session setup handling after Kerberos authentication processing.
