CVE-2025-38051 is an expired-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel SMB/CIFS client directory-reading path. A race between concurrent directory-read operations can release an SMB response buffer while cifs_fill_dirent retains and dereferences search-information pointers into that buffer. The vulnerable path can occur when the directory-query operation returns an error, including interruption by a pending fatal signal, and execution subsequently processes the stale pointers. The upstream fix validates the directory-query return status before using the search information.
