CVE-2025-38141 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel device-mapper subsystem's dm_blk_report_zones() path. During initial zone-append emulation setup, dm_revalidate_zones() can set zone-revalidation state while blk_revalidate_disk_zones() operates on a new, not-yet-activated device-mapper table. A concurrent zone-reporting invocation can access zone-append resources through this state. If revalidation fails, those resources can be freed while the concurrent invocation still uses them. The affected logic also inconsistently handled live-table references when the zone-revalidation mapping changed during execution. The fix reads the state consistently, balances live-table reference handling, and restricts access to the unactivated table to the process performing zone revalidation.

A Linux kernel use-after-free vulnerability in device mapper caused by a race condition in zone reporting.
Linux kernel device-mapper use-after-free vulnerability caused by a race condition during zone reporting.
A resolved Linux kernel device-mapper (DM) race condition in dm_blk_report_zones that can cause a use-after-free during zoned-device zone append emulation resource revalidation. The fix tracks the process performing zone revalidation and restricts access to the not-yet-active table during device suspension.
