CVE-2025-38449 is a reference-counting flaw in the Linux kernel DRM/GEM framebuffer path. A GEM handle can be released while its associated GEM buffer object remains attached to a DRM framebuffer. If the object is backed by a dma-buf, releasing the handle can prematurely release that backing object even though the framebuffer remains usable. Subsequent modesetting or page-flip operations may dereference the stale dma-buf, including through dma_buf_vmap(), causing a kernel fault. The underlying flaw predates expanded use of the GEM object's dma-buf field, which made the fault easier to trigger. The fix obtains GEM-handle references for buffer objects attached to a framebuffer and releases them during framebuffer cleanup.
