CVE-2025-40005 is a Linux kernel flaw in the spi: cadence-quadspi driver. The driver supported indirect read and indirect write operations under the assumption that the device would not be forcibly removed or unbound while I/O was in progress. However, a privileged user could still trigger force device removal via driver unbind/removal interfaces. If the cadence-quadspi driver was unbound during an active indirect read or write operation, the lack of proper lifetime tracking and synchronization could lead to a kernel crash. The fix adds reference counting for devices attached to the controller so removal waits gracefully for in-flight operations and attached-device removal to complete before proceeding.
