CVE-2025-40082 is a local Linux kernel vulnerability in the HFS+ filesystem implementation. The flaw is in hfsplus_uni2asc() in fs/hfsplus/unicode.c when invoked from hfsplus_listxattr(). In that call path, the function is passed a struct hfsplus_attr_unistr *, but the code handled it as though it were a struct hfsplus_unistr *. Because those structures differ in size/layout, the prior fix was incomplete and the unicode buffer pointer could advance beyond the allocated slab object, causing a slab out-of-bounds read. The upstream fix adds separate wrapper functions, hfsplus_uni2asc_xattr_str() and hfsplus_uni2asc_str(), for the two unicode buffer types and clamps ustrlen to a safe bound when the claimed string length exceeds the allocated buffer size.
