CVE-2025-40096 is a double-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel DRM scheduler's reservation-dependency handling, specifically drm_sched_job_add_resv_dependencies(). The error path incorrectly releases a DMA fence reference after drm_sched_job_add_dependency() has already consumed that reference. This occurs when dependency insertion fails, including failure to expand the underlying xarray. Releasing the already-consumed fence reference through dma_fence_put() causes a double free. The affected dependency-tracking logic existed in earlier forms and subsequent scheduler changes altered, but did not eliminate, the erroneous reference-release behavior.
