CVE-2025-40604 is a high-severity vulnerability in SonicWall Email Security appliances caused by loading root filesystem images without verifying their cryptographic signatures. This is a download/load of code without an integrity check condition. Because the appliance does not validate the authenticity of the root filesystem image before use, an attacker with access to the underlying VMDK or datastore can tamper with the image, modify system files, and cause the appliance to boot or operate with attacker-controlled code. The issue affects SonicWall Email Security appliance models 5000, 5050, 7000, 7050, 9000, and virtual deployments on VMware and Hyper-V prior to the fixed release identified in the available content.
