CVE-2025-49698 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Word caused by a use-after-free condition. The flaw occurs when Word accesses memory after it has already been freed, creating a memory corruption condition that can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code in the context of the affected application. Microsoft classifies the issue under CWE-416 and describes it as allowing an unauthorized attacker to execute code locally. Although labeled as a remote code execution vulnerability, exploitation is performed through attacker-controlled content delivered to the target, such as a specially crafted document, rather than through direct network exposure. The Preview Pane is also an attack vector, meaning code execution may be triggered during document preview rather than full document opening. Microsoft assigned CVSS 3.1 7.8 with vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H.
