CVE-2025-52881 is a race-condition vulnerability in runc, the OCI container runtime, that affects versions 1.2.7, 1.3.2, and 1.4.0-rc.2. The flaw allows an attacker to cause runc to misdirect writes intended for procfs to unintended procfs targets by exploiting a racing container with shared mounts. The redirection can be achieved through symlink manipulation in tmpfs and potentially through other mount-based techniques such as bind mounts. The issue is closely related to CVE-2019-19921, but the earlier mitigation only verified that certain LSM label writes targeted procfs, which was insufficient to prevent broader write redirection. Because runc performs writes to /proc during container setup, an attacker can transform legitimate runtime writes into attacker-chosen writes to sensitive procfs files, including writes associated with sysctl configuration and security labeling.
