CVE-2025-53109 affects the Filesystem server in the Model Context Protocol (MCP) reference implementations. In versions prior to 0.6.4 or 2025.7.01, the server can allow access to unintended files via symbolic links located within otherwise allowed directories. The issue is described as a symbolic link bypass caused by poor error handling in path restriction enforcement. As a result, an attacker who can cause the server to operate on attacker-controlled or attacker-influenced paths inside an approved directory may traverse through symlinks and reach files outside the intended containment boundary.
