CVE-2025-65716 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Markdown Preview Enhanced extension for Visual Studio Code, reported in version 0.8.18 and also described as affecting all versions. The flaw stems from unsafe rendering of HTML content in Markdown preview, specifically insufficient sanitization or restriction of attacker-controlled HTML tags embedded in Markdown documents. By supplying a crafted Markdown file and inducing a victim to open it in the extension’s preview feature, an attacker can execute arbitrary JavaScript within the preview context, including execution through iframe-based content under the browser same-origin model used by the preview environment. This turns a Markdown preview action into an active script execution surface inside the developer workstation context.
