CVE-2025-68788 is an information-disclosure vulnerability in the Linux kernel fsnotify subsystem affecting inotify and fanotify parent-directory watches. Before the fix, fsnotify generated ACCESS and MODIFY events to watchers of a parent directory when another user read from or wrote to a child special file, even if the watcher lacked read access to that child. Unlike regular files, special files generally do not expose equivalent access or modification activity through observable timestamp changes. The patch suppresses ACCESS and MODIFY events for ordinary reads and writes of child special files to align event visibility with observable filesystem metadata behavior. Events caused by explicit timestamp changes remain reportable.

A Linux kernel file-notification information-disclosure issue in which observable device-file events could enable unprivileged local users to infer keyboard activity and other user activity from event timing.
A Linux inotify file-notification side-channel issue that allowed unprivileged users to observe access and modification events on special files under /dev, enabling scenarios such as monitoring /dev/input for keystroke-timing inference. The cited kernel releases partially remediate it by blocking access and modify events on special files in /dev.
A Linux inotify file-notification side-channel vulnerability that can expose file-event metadata to unprivileged local users, including events for files they cannot read. It can enable inference attacks such as keystroke-timing attacks through monitoring of readable directories such as /dev/input.
