CVE-2025-71089 is a Linux kernel vulnerability in the IOMMU Shared Virtual Addressing (SVA) path on x86 systems. In an SVA context, the IOMMU shares and walks CPU page tables. Because x86 maps the kernel virtual address space into the upper portion of every process page table, the IOMMU can walk and cache kernel page-table entries as well as user mappings. The kernel did not provide a notification mechanism to the IOMMU for kernel page-table changes when kernel page-table pages were freed and later reused; IOMMU invalidation notifications covered user virtual address mappings only. As a result, the IOMMU could retain stale paging-cache/IOTLB entries for kernel virtual addresses and continue interpreting freed, reallocated memory as valid page tables. This creates a use-after-free condition and also a write-after-free condition because the IOMMU may continue updating Accessed/Dirty bits in freed memory. The upstream resolution described in the provided content disables SVA on x86 until proper cache invalidation coordination exists, while the broader fix series introduces deferred freeing of kernel page-table pages to allow safe IOMMU cache invalidation before reuse.
