CVE-2025-9231 is a timing side-channel vulnerability in OpenSSL's SM2 algorithm implementation affecting 64-bit ARM platforms. The issue arises during SM2 signature computations, where execution time varies in a way that may leak information about the private key through timing measurements. OpenSSL assessed the flaw as relevant primarily to environments using SM2 on 64-bit ARM, especially where SM2 private-key operations are exposed remotely. OpenSSL does not natively use SM2 certificates in standard TLS deployments, so most TLS configurations are not affected unless SM2 support has been added through a custom provider. The OpenSSL FIPS modules for the affected branches are not impacted because SM2 is not an approved algorithm in those modules.
