CVE-2026-0265 is a pre-authentication authentication bypass vulnerability in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS affecting PA-Series and VM-Series firewalls and Panorama appliances when Cloud Authentication Service (CAS) is enabled and attached to a login interface. The flaw is caused by improper verification of JSON Web Token signatures in the PAN-OS authentication path, including the pan_auth_verify function in libpanmp_mp.so. PAN-OS trusts the attacker-controlled JWT alg header and dispatches verification logic accordingly instead of enforcing the expected asymmetric signing algorithm for CAS-issued tokens. As described in public technical analysis, if the alg value is set to an HMAC variant such as HS256, the implementation uses CAS certificate material as the HMAC secret and accepts a forged token as valid. This algorithm-confusion condition allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to craft a token that is treated as a legitimate CAS authentication artifact and thereby bypass authentication controls. The issue is applicable to PAN-OS software on PA-Series and VM-Series firewalls and on Panorama, while Cloud NGFW and Prisma Access are not affected.
