CVE-2026-0386 is a critical improper access control vulnerability in Windows Deployment Services (WDS), specifically in the Hands-Free Deployment functionality used for automated operating system deployment. The issue arises because the Unattend.xml answer file can be transmitted over an unauthenticated RPC channel and exposed through native WDS deployment workflows, allowing an attacker on an adjacent network to intercept deployment configuration data. Because the answer file may contain sensitive deployment parameters and credentials, an attacker can use the exposed information to compromise the deployment process and inject malicious code that executes during operating system installation. Microsoft indicated the issue affects Windows Server versions from Server 2008 through Server 2025, including Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and version 23H2.
