CVE-2026-12617 is a remotely exploitable denial-of-service vulnerability in the BIND 9 resolver. Specific ordering and content of authoritative DNS responses for CNAME or DNAME records together with A records can trigger an assertion failure and cause the named process to terminate unexpectedly. One trigger sequence involves a query for a DNAME and an A record below that DNAME, followed by a positive A response, a delayed DNAME response, and a negative DNAME response. A second sequence involves queries for a CNAME and A record at the same name, followed by a positive A response and a delayed self-referential CNAME response. Affected releases are BIND 9.18.0 through 9.18.50, BIND 9.20.0 through 9.20.24, BIND Supported Preview Edition 9.18.11-S1 through 9.18.50-S1, and 9.20.9-S1 through 9.20.24-S1.
