CVE-2026-16554 is an integer overflow vulnerability in the cJSON library, confirmed in version 1.7.19 and potentially affecting other versions. The flaw is in the print_string_ptr() function in cJSON.c on 32-bit platforms, where the escape_characters counter uses a 32-bit size_t. When processing extremely large strings containing roughly 858,993,460 or more control characters, this counter can wrap around, causing the library to underestimate the required output buffer length. If cJSON_PrintBuffered() is then used with a pre-allocated buffer, the subsequent write loop can overflow the heap allocation. The issue is reachable when an application accepts attacker-controlled JSON data and later serializes the resulting string content through the vulnerable printing path.
