CVE-2026-21916 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Juniper Networks Junos OS CLI caused by unsafe handling of symbolic links during CLI file operations and subsequent configuration commits. A low-privileged authenticated local user can perform a specific 'file link' CLI operation to create conditions for exploitation. When another authenticated user later performs a configuration commit, even if the commit is unrelated, the privileged commit process follows the attacker-controlled symbolic link in a root execution context. This improper symlink resolution can alter system state in a way that allows the original attacker to subsequently log in as root. The flaw affects multiple Junos OS release trains prior to vendor-fixed versions and can result in full system compromise.
