CVE-2026-22603 affects OpenProject versions prior to 16.6.2. The unauthenticated password-change endpoint at /account/change_password did not enforce the same brute-force protections as the normal login flow. Specifically, the endpoint lacked failed-attempt tracking and lockout/rate-limiting logic, and did not invoke the controls used elsewhere in authentication, including failed_too_many_recent_login_attempts? and log_failed_login. As a result, an unauthenticated remote attacker who can guess or enumerate valid user IDs can submit unlimited password-change requests and repeatedly test candidate passwords against targeted accounts without triggering normal anti-brute-force defenses. Successful password guessing leads to compromise of the targeted account.
