CVE-2026-22689 affects Mailpit, an email testing tool and API for developers. In Mailpit versions prior to 1.28.2, the WebSocket server is configured to accept connections from any Origin because Origin validation is effectively disabled. This permits Cross-Site WebSocket Hijacking (CSWSH): a malicious website visited by a user running Mailpit can initiate a WebSocket connection to the victim’s Mailpit instance, commonly exposed at ws://localhost:8025, and receive Mailpit’s real-time broadcast data. The vulnerable condition is the unsafe acceptance of arbitrary cross-origin WebSocket upgrade requests rather than enforcing same-origin or an allowlist of trusted origins. As a result, attacker-controlled web content can access sensitive Mailpit data such as email contents, headers, metadata, and server statistics.
