CVE-2026-24120 is a critical sandbox escape vulnerability in vm2, the Node.js sandbox library, caused by an incomplete remediation for CVE-2023-37466. In vulnerable versions, the resetPromiseSpecies protection intended to sanitize Promise species handling can be bypassed from within the sandbox. Reported analysis indicates the mitigation relied on attacker-reachable primitives such as Object.defineProperty, allowing sandboxed code to neutralize the protection and then abuse Promise species behavior to obtain a host-realm exception object. From that host object, an attacker can traverse the constructor chain to reach the host Function constructor and break out of vm2’s isolation boundary. Successful exploitation results in arbitrary command execution on the underlying host system. The issue affects vm2 versions prior to 3.10.5 and is fixed in version 3.10.5.
