libpng versions before 1.6.55 contain an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in png_set_quantize(). When called without a histogram and with a palette containing more than twice the maximum number of colors supported by the user's display, certain palettes cause an infinite loop that reads beyond an internal heap-allocated buffer. PNG images conforming to the specification can trigger the flaw. The vulnerability can disrupt applications performing the affected palette quantization and is fixed in libpng 1.6.55.

Referenced by the AlmaLinux 9.6 security check and used as its CVSS v3 and v4 score source. Both base vectors indicate network access, high attack complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction. The exploit-maturity metrics indicate proof-of-concept exploitation, and the v3 remediation metric indicates an official fix. The underlying flaw is not described.
A network-accessible vulnerability whose CVSS vectors indicate high attack complexity and no required privileges or user interaction. The CVSS v4 vector indicates low confidentiality and integrity impacts and high availability impact. Exploits and a patch are reported available, but the affected product and underlying flaw are not identified.
