CVE-2026-26960 affects the Node.js tar implementation node-tar in versions 7.5.7 and earlier. When extracting an attacker-controlled archive with default options, the library can be induced to create a hardlink inside the extraction directory that actually references a file outside the intended extraction root. The issue bypasses extraction path protections by using archive link semantics rather than a direct path traversal write. As a result, archive extraction becomes a filesystem access primitive that can be used to read from or write to files outside the destination directory with the privileges of the extracting process. The issue is fixed in node-tar 7.5.8.
