CVE-2026-27830 is an arbitrary code execution vulnerability in c3p0, a JDBC connection pooling library. Several c3p0 ConnectionPoolDataSource implementations expose a writable JavaBean property, userOverridesAsString, which conceptually represents a Map<String,Map<String,String>>. In versions prior to 0.12.0, this property was stored as a hex-encoded Java serialized object. If an attacker can reset this property directly on an existing ConnectionPoolDataSource, or supply crafted serialized objects or javax.naming.Reference instances that populate it, c3p0 may deserialize attacker-controlled data and process embedded JNDI references. This can lead to execution of unexpected code available on the application classpath. The risk is amplified by vulnerable behavior in mchange-commons-java, which historically included permissive JNDI-like handling, including support for remote factoryClassLocation values. In affected deployments, attacker-controlled data placed into userOverridesAsString can trigger dereferencing of embedded javax.naming.Reference objects and remote loading of malicious code. In c3p0 0.12.0 and later, userOverridesAsString was redesigned to use a CSV-based format instead of Java object serialization, and additional JNDI protections were added through newer mchange-commons-java behavior and enforced name guarding.
