CVE-2026-31892 is an authorization flaw in Argo Workflows that allows a user with permission to submit Workflows to bypass security restrictions defined in a referenced WorkflowTemplate. The issue affects Argo Workflows from version 2.9.0 up to, but not including, 3.7.11 and 4.0.2. In deployments using WorkflowTemplate references, including configurations with templateReferencing set to Strict, a user-supplied Workflow can include the WorkflowSpec podSpecPatch field. During workflow spec merging, this field takes precedence over the referenced WorkflowTemplate and is later applied directly to the Kubernetes pod specification without security validation. As a result, admin-approved template constraints can be overridden by attacker-controlled pod specification changes, defeating the intended enforcement boundary of strict template referencing.

A previously addressed Argo Workflows vulnerability whose fix was incomplete, leading to the newly assigned bypass vulnerability CVE-2026-54526.
An earlier Argo Workflows vulnerability whose fix only blocked podSpecPatch overrides, leaving other dangerous WorkflowSpec fields unprotected and leading to the later incomplete-fix issue tracked as CVE-2026-42296.
An incorrect authorization vulnerability in Argo Workflows that allowed users to bypass security settings via the podSpecPatch field.
Authorization bypass in Argo Workflows where a user permitted to submit Workflows can override/bypass WorkflowTemplate security controls by using the podSpecPatch field, even under templateReferencing: Strict, due to insecure spec merging and lack of security validation before pod creation.
