CVE-2026-33278 is a critical memory-safety vulnerability in the DNSSEC validator of NLnet Labs Unbound affecting versions 1.19.1 through 1.25.0. The flaw occurs in logic that preserves response messages across memory region teardown when DS sub-queries suspend validation because the NSEC3 computational budget is exhausted. During this path, Unbound performs a deep copy of a data structure, but a struct-assignment bug incorrectly overwrites a destination pointer with the source pointer instead of preserving the copied destination reference. When the sub-query memory region is later freed and validation resumes, the validator dereferences a dangling pointer. This results in a use-after-free condition that can crash the resolver and may be exploitable for remote code execution. The issue was introduced with the NSEC3 computational budget exhaustion handling added in Unbound 1.19.1 and was fixed in Unbound 1.25.1 by preserving the correct pointer during the deep-copy operation.
