CVE-2026-33636 is an out-of-bounds read and write vulnerability in libpng versions 1.6.36 through 1.6.55. The flaw is in the ARM/AArch64 NEON-optimized palette-expansion path used when decoding 8-bit indexed-color PNG rows into RGB or RGBA output. The backward-processing NEON loop can process a final partial chunk without confirming that sufficient source pixels remain. It consequently dereferences input pointers before the beginning of the row buffer and writes expanded output to corresponding underflowed positions. An attacker-controlled PNG can reach the vulnerable path during normal image decoding on systems where NEON acceleration is enabled.
