CVE-2026-33636 is an out-of-bounds memory access vulnerability in libpng affecting versions 1.6.36 through 1.6.55. The flaw is in the ARM/AArch64 Neon-optimized palette expansion path used during decoding of 8-bit paletted PNG rows into RGB or RGBA output. The vulnerable implementation processes image data backward from the end of the row buffer in fixed-size chunks and fails to verify that sufficient input pixels remain for the final partial iteration. As a result, the last loop iteration can dereference memory before the start of the row buffer and write expanded pixel data to the same underflowed region. The issue is reachable during normal decoding of attacker-controlled PNG input when Neon optimizations are enabled.
