CVE-2026-3497 is a flaw in downstream GSSAPI Key Exchange patches carried by various Linux distributions; upstream OpenSSH is not affected. In server-side GSSAPI KEX error handling, the patch invokes sshpkt_disconnect(), which queues a disconnect and returns, where ssh_packet_disconnect(), which terminates processing, was required. An unexpected GSSAPI message can therefore cause error-handling fallthrough and use an uninitialized recv_tok stack variable. The value is passed through the privilege-separation IPC path and subsequently to gss_release_buffer(), which may free an invalid pointer. Resulting behavior depends materially on the distribution patch variant and compiler hardening, optimization, and memory-layout characteristics.
