uutils coreutils contains a vulnerability in its chroot utility when invoked with the --userspec option. After entering the attacker-influenced new root directory, the program resolves the supplied user specification via getpwnam() before dropping root privileges. On glibc-based systems, this lookup can invoke the Name Service Switch (NSS) subsystem, which may dynamically load libnss_*.so.2 shared libraries from paths within the new root. If the NEWROOT directory is writable or otherwise controllable by an attacker, they can place a malicious NSS module there and cause it to be loaded and executed while chroot is still running with root privileges. This creates a privileged code execution path and can enable escape from a containerized environment or local privilege escalation.
